UPDATE: Below is our positive initial review from April 2022. It's now November 2024 and I think we're replacing the mattress. Two and a half years later, it's gotten a bit softer. I couldn't be entirely sure it's the mattress rather than my further aging, but regular morning backaches combined with a sore hip and shoulder (probably not the mattress's fault but a condition that made both more sensitive to pressure) led me to look for alternatives. My wife agreed it had become softer on the side of the better I sleep even if not on her side (I'm about 190 pounds, 5'8") but her comfort wasn't as affected. We're now trying an innerspring mattress with a foam layer (Avocado) because of its favorable reviews in Consumer Reports and by our son. They offer a one-year trial period so it seemed worth trying. Slept on it last night for the first time and am hopeful, certainly slept well last night (as did my wife). It seems quite firm, yet it also didn't seem to put as much pressure on my side and shoulder, and I slept through the night for the first time in some time.***********ORIGINAL REVIEWWe purchased this model mattress few days ago from Costco for $700, an excellent price. Because I could find no reviews of this particular model, I was a bit hesitant, but there were several things about it that made us optimistic: a)Caspar generally gets good reviews, both here, and from Consumer Reports; b) it was the right thickness at 12" (more about that below); c) Caspar's claims about how it was configured addressed what we cared about: a firm but conforming mattress that e.g., providing hip cushioning for side sleepers like me, and was not warm.I was also relying on the moneyback guarantee if it did not work out. Another reviewer of a different Caspar mattress was unhappy to discover Caspar would not honor that guarantee (he said) because he had bought it from Costco, and he could not imagine how he could put it back in box to ship to Costco for a refund from them. So I called Costco before buying and confirmed that Costco does not require you to ship it back in box. I was assured that if I wished to return the mattress (which I picked up at a Costco store) I could just stuff it without packaging in the back of my SUV to bring it back. I also think that had I bought it online from Costco they would take care of return shipping if I didn't want to bring it back to a store, but I didn't confirm that.Anyway, the mattress has completely vindicated my hopes. We have slept primarily on foam mattresses since we bought our first more than 40 years ago in college--but that doesn't count because 20-year olds can get themselves comfortable in conditions that would never work for us today (we're now in our 70's). Back then foam mattresses were all 6 or maybe 8 inches thick and no fancy layering etc. Tempurpedic revolutionized the concept with fancier memory mattresses that were thicker and much more expensive. We eventually bought the first models of Novafoam 20 years ago when they were main, low cost competitors to Tempurpedic and sold I think only at Costco. It was a 14 inch mattress with various layers--there was then only one Novafoam model--and it was great to sleep on. But a 14 inch mattress was a pain to deal with it--very heavy just to lift it to make the bed, and the bed was just too high (reaching down to nightstand hardly convenient). So when we moved out of state we left that mattress for our son who wanted it. We spent ten years trying to find something as comfortable that was easier to handle, looking for thinner mattresses that worked for our older bodies.Well, now we have finally solved that problem. At 12 inches the Caspar (85 lbs) is just enough lighter it's not a problem, and the height works too. But it's thick enough (and I suspect their layering also mattered) to provide the kind of firm cushioning we could never achieve with 8 or 9 inch mattresses. It's clearly the most comfortable mattress we've had, it's exactly what a good memory foam mattress is supposed to be: molds to your body so parts that stick down like your hips or rear get cushioned in their own soft pockets, yet at the same time firm so you don't end up jack-knifed when lying on your back--good support for the small of your back. And it's the first foam mattress we've had that doesn't cause my wife to wake with night sweats. We're both happy.I should probably add we have the right kind of bed frame for a foam mattress--no foundation, but proper wooden slats that mattress goes on directly, as recommended by Caspar. You could also use a solid platform. But a foundation meant for a spring coil mattress is not good for these. It's amazing how much improving one's sleep with a good mattress can do for you!
