This charming story is written from the perspective of a charming little corgi who was born into the misery of being viewed as imperfect and an embarrassment to the lady who breed him. He watched all the other corgis getting lavished with love and praise, and he witnessed all his siblings going off to their new families while he was locked away hidden in the kitchen. He felt the loneliness of isolation and shame of his one droopy ear that refused to stand up. He over- heard the repeated demands of the breeder that her husband take "the puppy" to "the shed" and take care of this immediately. The puppy saw the couple glancing at him. He didn't know what happened in "the shed", but in his brief life he had seen the man take other puppies to the shed at the back of the property. The man always returned alone. One evening, the man slipped off to the pub after another argument between the couple where the lady again demanded her husband take the puppy to the shed that night when he returned from the pub. Through a coincidence at the pub, the puppy came to the attention of Her Majesty from a member of her staff. The staff member was immediately dispatched to rescue the doomed puppy. That is the night he was whisked from the dark shadow of shame, loneliness, and an unfortunate end into a beautiful world of gilded mirrors, light, red carpets, warm beds by the hearth, and that which he most desired, companionship and love. He was delighted with his new mistress who even let him sleep on her bed when he had bad dreams about his former life. He delighted in his new corgi family who taught him the ropes of how to be a royal corgi. He got to greet visitors to the palace, and he got to listen to the wisdom of his new mistress. He gets to listen in on the private conversations between his new mistresses family, and he learned which ones were easily persuaded to slip him a little something tasty under the table! Though he and his corgi family travel with the household staff, they can always hear the motorcade pulling up outside anyone of the castles. They corgis just knew in which car their beloved mistress was riding, and the knew she would greet them enthusiastically. This is such a lovely novel seen from the knee-high view of a royal corgi - on purpose.
